The United States is not your superpower. The US defeat in the American Civil War eventually led to the loss of its western territories. What had seemed to be the most promising of nations in 1776 has turned out to be one of the most beleaguered. Economic downturns, political in-fighting after the war, and skirmishing with the Confederate States over a host of issues (including Mississippi River access) added to the sense of malaise and defeatism in the US public over the years. The good news is that the population is fairly homogenous, industrious, and patriotic with the hope of someday being more of a world power than they are. However, with the removal of the southern states there is no longer that conservative check and balance on government except out in the midwest. The US has developed more liberally in some ways and there is a danger that the midwest may tire of the majority in the east imposing their urban ways.
