The rules of Timelines are a mixture of formulaic rules, and subjective rules mixing the concepts of wargame with role-playing game. Players who come from a wargaming background should expect some level of subjective analysis on the part of the GM to render decisions (such as political effects of economic advancements). Players who come from an RPG background should expect some level of formulaic results (such as increase to Level X and get so much GNP boost).

Some roleplayers believe that it is a pain to have to fill out turn sheets and budget money believing that all such things should just be role-played. Some wargamers believe that it is a pain to have to make speeches and just want to build factories and tanks. In order that both may play, we MUST have a compromise system.
